JMTF Burn Tank picture

The Joint Maritime Test Facility (JMTF) is an organizational element of the Coast Guard Research, Development, Test and Evaluation Program that can be used to advance the research of oil spill response technologies that involve full-scale in-situ burns.

The JMTF is located at Coast Guard Sector Mobile in Alabama and provides a relevant maritime test environment that meets (or has appropriate waivers for) all federal, state and local environmental standards. The JMTF includes a burn pan and is the leading national test facility for in-situ burning research.

Burn Pan Key Facts

  • Located on Little Sand Island in Mobile Bay

  • 100 feet long by 30 feet wide

  • Contains natural seawater from Bile Bay; burn pan can be filled up to 4 feet deep

  • Diesel fuel/crude oil is released through a nozzle from the bottom of the burn pan

  • Wave maker provides a range of wave conditions
