Coast Guard Care Anywhere

Telehealth is the remote delivery of healthcare by a range of options, including but not limited to, landline communication services, cellular service and Internet. Telehealth expands access to care and  improves the patient experience by reducing the need to travel to Military Treatment Facilities (MTF’s) when remote support is available. To answer the service's needs and provide continuity of care for beneficiaries, the U.S. Coast Guard health services community requires a Health Information Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) Compliant Telehealth capability.

The Coast Guard Care Anywhere (CGCA) Telehealth platform was established in Fiscal Year 2020 through the contracting process in response to the National COVID-19 Pandemic Emergency. During this time, the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) issued a Notification of Enforcement Discretion for Telehealth Remote Communications during the COVID-19 Nationwide Public Health Emergency, dated March 17, 2020, which allowed health care providers to serve their patient community using every day communication technologies without HIPPA violation penalties. The USCG recognized the long-term need for a HIPAA compliant telehealth tool outside of the network (CGOne) to ensure our members have access to medical services.  CGCA has ensured resiliency within its health care delivery infrastructure by providing access to organic care within regional practices, isolated areas and areas with limited resources.

The Telehealth capability will address the immediate need to enhance the flexibility of Coast Guard providers and increase access to care during our nation’s response to the 2019 Novel Coronavirus Disease (COVID-19) Pandemic and after. Telehealth is a now solution that will permanently be integrated into the Coast Guard’s health care delivery model with CGCA as the current solution and ultimately MHS GENESIS Video Connect.
