DHS Leader Development Program

About the Program

Secretary Napolitano established the Leader Development Program Office in May 2010 under the Office of the Chief Human Capital Officer in order to elevate the importance of leader effectiveness across DHS as an investment in mission achievement.

Through the dedicated efforts of cross-Component working groups, the DHS Leader Development Program (LDP) was established around a DHS-specific Leader Development Framework and Leader Development Competencies.  The Framework (click on image below for more information) identified five levels of DHS leaders – Team Member, Team Lead, Supervisor, Manager, and Executive – and roadmaps for required and best-practice developmental activities at each level. The purpose of the Leader Development Program is to ensure all DHS Components collaborate to support a consistent investment in the development of every leader across the Department.

For additional information on the department level program, please visit the DHS Leader Development Program (Accessible only through Coast Guard workstations) website.

To hear more about the program directly from the Deputy Executive Director of the DHS Leader Development Program, Ms. Lina Savkar, please click on the following link: What is the DHS Leader Development Program? (video runtime: 8:10). Finally, DHS supplies each Component with a monthly “Leadership Matters e-sheet” to continue the leader development discussion, check out the Leadership Matters e-sheet.
