The mission of the Office of Leadership is to communicate and facilitate the Commandant’s Leadership Philosophy and Coast Guard Leadership Competencies by providing Officer, Enlisted, and Civilian personnel with information and resources for professional development opportunities, recognizing exceptional leadership, and establishing policies to sustain leaders of character at all levels.

    Interested in taking your leadership skills to the next level? Seats are available for the Chief Petty Officer Academy (CPOA) and Leadership & Management School (LAMS) for active duty, enlisted, reservists and civilians.  CPOA is accepting enrollment for the reservist session in February, as well as for all open sessions for active duty, enlisted, reservists and civilians through September. Reservists, it’s not too late to enroll in the February sessions, but commitments are needed ASAP to fill critical seats. If you’re interested in either of these courses, please contact your Command Training Officer for proper enrollment procedures. (NEW)!
     
    The 2021 Coast Guard Leadership Development is out. Enjoy the annual collection of recommendations from your shipmates to support your continuous leadership development. This year the list is focused on professional development, and features submissions from Coast Guard personnel engaged in learning including course instructors and learning cohorts. (NEW!)
     
    Applications are now being accepted for Civilian & military leadership development programs with Graduate School USA and the Partnership in Public Service, which are designed to grow military and future public service leaders. Programs include Aspiring Leader (GS 4 – 6), New Leader (GS 7-11), Executive Leader (GS 11-13), Executive Potential (GS 13-15) and Excellence in Government Fellows  (GS 14-15, O5 and O6). Acquire the skills and knowledge you need to manage and supervisor civilians with Supervisors of Civilians Tier II. Two sessions are offered in December 2021, and seven are offered January - September 2022. Please sign up two weeks prior to the start date of your desired session. Sign up for the new Senior Leadership Transition Course (SLTC)  (NEW!)

Six classes are being offered this year, the most ever, so this is the year to sign up for this course (formerly known as MOCTC-2). Chief Petty Officer Academy is open for all E-6’s above the latest SWE Cutoff for E-7, and any E-7 that has not completed the course

It is open to those seeking SWE eligibility for E-8 competition. Admission is on a first-come, first-served basis and limited seats are available for the remaining FY21 sessions. Information on the class dates and ETR submission guidelines are available here.

 
 

Study organizational leadership development to help the Coast Guard improve workforce competence and proficiency in leadership. 

Selectees will study leadership development tactics, strategic change management, and group dynamics. Students may attend George Washington University or complete the program online. Alternate universities also considered. Deadline to apply is June 10, 2021. Learn more here.

Over five fun filled days you’ll learn how to effectively manage group dynamics, identify opportunities for improvement, and implement change initiatives in order to better lead workgroups and teams for continued performance improvement. Further your career and personal goals with the improved and streamlined Individual Development Plan 

The new IDP is written in a conversational tone, making it easy to use. It walks you through all the Big Picture questions that often get overlooked during annual reviews, OERs and EERs. IDPs are mandatory for first-term enlisted members and junior officers (both active duty and reserve), who have been assigned to a permanent duty station. Coast Guard Advances Inclusive Leadership Commitment to its Workforce with Updates to Leadership Competencies 

To embed inclusive leadership in the Coast Guard's workforce, improve professional development, and sustain positive cultural change within the service, four of the Coast Guard's 28 leadership competencies have been updated. The revised competencies include a basis for Coast Guard leaders at all levels to grow in their inclusive leadership skills and emotional intelligence by applying an equity mindset that strengthens the Coast Guard and the experiences of its members.

 
 

Enroll Now in the New CG Mentoring Program - Mentoring Connections Are Underway 

In April 2021, the Coast Guard launched the new Coast Guard Mentoring Program designed to offer expanded leadership opportunities and connection for our active duty, reservist and civilian workforce. The program is powered by modernized software that is mobile/web enabled, and is accessible through most personal devices. Enrollment is now open, and mentoring connections are underway.
