With the Coast Guard Business Intelligence (CGBI) platform headed for a condo in Boca and early-bird specials as outlined in (ALCOAST 469-24), it’s time to get well acquainted with the new kid in town: Navigator.

The Office of Data & Analytics (CG-TECH-3), along with C5ISC, CG-C5I, and DCS-5, is transforming the Coast Guard’s Business Intelligence capability into a modern data visualization tool that supports a federated domain approach. This tool, known as Navigator, will replace the aging CGBI application, and align to key Force Design 2028 (ALCOAST 155-25) objectives of improving internal decision-making capacity and optimizing mission readiness capabilities.

Making friends with Navigator is particularly important now that Coast Guard military members Employee Summary Sheets (ESS) can now be viewed there. This critical career “snapshot” includes your training history, position history, awards and honors, and pretty much everything else related to your time with the Coast Guard.

This is an exciting development, but the CGBI transition team wants to make sure everyone is aware that this is an initial release, and it has some limitations right now:

  • At this time, only Coast Guard military members can view their ESS in Navigator. Hang in there, civilians, they’re working on yours.

  • At this time, Coast Guard military members can only view their OWN ESS in Navigator. Organizational views and the ability to pull multiple ESS’ are coming in a future release.

  • Until CGBI is fully decommissioned, the CGBI ESS should remain the single source of truth while the team gathers feedback on the Navigator ESS and continues to improve the data product.

This initial release is part of the Agile Delivery Framework, which allows developers to release a minimum viable product (MVP) out to the field, the field can then test the product and submit feedback. Finally, the developers can gather the feedback and continue to improve the product for future releases. You can expect this type of product delivery moving forward with additional Navigator releases. For more information on Agile, checkout the sketch graphic above.

You can help the transition effort along by providing your feedback to the CGBI transition team. They’ve got several options for you to share feedback, and they want to hear it!

If you’ve got issues accessing your ESS in Navigator, you can share that via the form here.

There is also a feedback form linked inside the ESS where you can share issues that appear on the document itself (ie, “my information is incomplete,” “my information is inaccurate”).

For general questions and support related to the CGBI transformation, you can email the team here.
