SUBJ: INCREASE TO MAXIMUM SERVICEMEMBERS GROUP LIFE INSURANCE
(SGLI) COVERAGE
A. Supporting Families of the Fallen Act (Public Law No. 117-209)
B. 38 U.S.C. Section 1967 - Persons insured; amount
1. This ALCOAST announces implementation of an increase to the
maximum Servicemembers' Group Life Insurance (SGLI) coverage for
eligible members from $400,000 to $500,000 effective 1 March 2023.
The increase was signed into law by REF (A) and will be codified
into REF (B).
2. All eligible Service members will automatically become insured
for $500,000 on 1 March 2023, including those who previously
declined or reduced coverage. The monthly premium remains at 6 cents
per $1,000 of SGLI coverage, plus an additional $1.00 charged each
month for SGLI traumatic injury protection (TSGLI). For comparison,
the current maximum SGLI coverage of $400,000 costs $24.00 USD per
month, plus $1.00 for TSGLI. The new maximum coverage of $500,000
will cost $30.00 USD per month, plus $1.00 for TSGLI, for a total
monthly increase in premium of $6.00.
3. There is no change to Family SGLI (FSGLI) spouse coverage.
However, members who previously declined SGLI coverage, and who do
not elect to cancel SGLI coverage after the increase goes into
effect, will now be able to elect FSGLI coverage for a spouse, but
must apply for such coverage following existing procedures.
4. Effective 1 March 2023, members who previously declined SGLI
coverage will automatically have dependent child coverage at no
cost until they opt to decline SGLI coverage. There is no change in
dependent child coverage for members who already had SGLI coverage.
5. Service members with SGLI coverage may reduce or decline coverage
using the SGLI Online Enrollment System (SOES) on 1 March 2023, or
before the end of March 2023 to avoid paying premiums for $500,000
of coverage. SOES can be accessed at:
