Welcome aboard messages:
Welcome aboard messages are sent to each new recruit. If the message is not received in time, recruits can contact the cutter at
(907) 487-5616 and ask to speak to their sponsor coordinator, YN1 Stephanie A. Fomby. Additional information is available on the Alex Haley Website. If there is no answer when you call, it means we are underway. In that case, send an email to
Stephanie.A.Fomby@uscg.mil and request the name of your sponsor.
Reporting guidance:
When reporting aboard, if you let your sponsor know when you will be arriving, they will meet you help you on the Cutter. They will show you to your assigned berthing and help get you settled in. If your sponsor is not available, contact the OOD, and they will help you until your sponsor is available. The sponsor will assist you through the check-in process. Onboard the ALEX HALEY it is standard practice to introduce our new shipmates at quarters and see that they meet with their Department Head, the Executive Officer, and the Commanding Officer as soon as practical.
Uniform to report in:
Operational Dress Uniform.
If sponsor not availible, recruit should ask for:
OOD (when reporting aboard). If calling, ask for sponsor by name or, if you are a SA/SN ask for the BM2, if you are an FA/FN, ask for an MK1. The number for the ALEX HALEY is (907) 487-5616.
How much personal storage space:
Each member has 1 small locker, storage space in their rack and storage space in the barracks.

Units missions:
Homeland security, search and rescue, law enforcement and fisheries management, Maritime Boundary Line patrol.
Common destinations of deployments:
Bering Sea (Maritime Boundary Line, Dutch Harbor, Gulf of Alaska), Homeland Security deployments on the West Coast (San Francisco, Eureka), and Dockside/drydock (Seward, Seattle, San Pedro, Everett).
Typical SA/SN job assignment:
Participating in all Deck evolutions (handling mooring lines, anchoring, raising/lowering small boats).
DCPQS Qualified, Inport Security Watchstander, Gangway Petty Officer of the Watch, Helm and Lookout, Small Boat Crewman, Helicopter Tie Down Team Member, Mess Cook, Member of Damage Control Teams, and Boarding Team Member.
Typical FA/FN job assignment:
Participating in all Engineering evolutions.
DCPQS Qualified, Inport Security Watchstander, Engineering Security Watchstander, Member of Damage Control Teams, Mess Cook, and Boarding Team Member.
Inport Watch and Duty rotation for SA/SN and FA/FN
Gangway Petty Officer of the Watch (GPOW) or Inport Security Watchstander (ISW) with a 1 in 4 or 5 rotation.
Underway Watch and Duty rotation for SA/SN:
Helm and Lookout with a 1 in 4 rotation.
Underway Watch and Duty rotation for FA/FN:
Engineering Security Watch with a 1 in 4 rotation.
Advancing to Petty Officer:
Nonrated personnel are eligible to apply to an "A" school for their desired rate after completing their first four months on board and advancing to SN/FN.
Special procedures for reporting after hours:
None: Report to quarterdeck.

None: The unit issues all cold weather gear. ALEX HALEY t-shirts and sweatshirts are available in the ship’s store.
