The MWR Intern Program offers students earning college credit toward a degree in a MWR-related field the opportunity to gain hands-on experience, while assisting with our mission to uplift the spirits of the Coast Guard Family.

MWR Internship, Baltimore, Maryland:
DESCRIPTION: U. S. Coast Guard Yard is located on the east end of Baltimore, Maryland, on Curtis Bay. The base is 10 miles from the center of city. A full MWR program is located on the Coast Guard Yard with the following facilities: Fitness Center and Gym, Ticket Resale, Columbus Recreation Center and Pool, Athletic Fields, Equipment Rental, Guest Housing, vehicle storage, and Drydock Food and Beverage Facility. Interns can expect to gain operational and programming experience in a number of these MWR facilities with some time spent in the MWR Director’s office. SUPERVISOR/MENTOR QUALIFICATIONS: Ms. Brandie DeRemer joined us as MWR Director at the Coast Guard Yard in Baltimore, Maryland, in June of 2017. She has over 16 years experience managing multiple programs with the Army MWR Program prior to this. She began her MWR career as a Management Trainee at Redstone Arsenal, in Alabama. Ms. DeRemer has vast experience with leading Sports, Fitness, Aquatics, Outdoor Recreation, Special Events, Automotive Skills, ITT, and other Recreation Services. She earned her Bachelor's degree from Penn State University in Recreation and Park Management where she was also a student athlete in Track and Field. A most notable accomplishment was her deployment to Baghdad Iraq where she had a major impact on serving thousands of deployed Service-Members with live entertainment, professional athletes, and VIP tours at forward operating bases. her goals are to use her experience, education, and passion for the field of Recreation to enhance Coast Guard MWR Programs and remain an avid supporter of the MWR mission world-wide.
HOUSING: Housing will be provided in guest housing rooms. The housing will be in a non-smoking facility and pets are not allowed. Students will coordinate housing with the Yard MWR Director once accepted at that location.
MEALS: Interns will be authorized access to the galley that serves 2 meals per day, 5 days per week. Interns will coordinate meal times with the Yard MWR Director once accepted at that location.
PAY: No pay, this is a volunteer internship.
TRAVEL: Travel to and from the internship is the responsibility of the student. It is highly recommended that you drive in order to have transportation in the surrounding area for personal evening and weekend purposes.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS: Air Station Borinquen seeks interns with emphasis in abilities to gain experience in conducting intramural sports competitions, outdoor recreation programs, special events, youth activities, aquatics, and in the areas of restaurant and lodging for Hospitality Management majors. Bi-lingual in Spanish is preferred, but not a requirement. Opportunities exist to work in a great fast-paced learning environment with flexible hours and diverse experiences in all of the facilities and activities describe above. Opportunities range from pool operations, to intramural sport programs, gym operations, and special annual events such as the Coast Guard Day picnic and Fourth of July celebrations. SUPERVISOR/MENTOR QUALIFICATIONS: Mr. Blair Markham has over 32 years of affiliation with the Coast Guard. Having served thirteen years at Coast Guard Air Station Borinquen, he understands and has experienced the unique needs of their community. From the young single person, to those married with dependents, he is fully aware of and committed to supporting and resolving quality of life issues for members assigned to Borinquen.
HOUSING: Housing will be provided in a fully furnished house with kitchen, bath, washer, dryer, refrigerator, microwave, cable TV, and wireless internet. House is a non-smoking facility and pets are not allowed.
MEALS: The Community Center offers two - three meals per week. Personal meal preparation is also possible in the fully furnished kitchen provided in housing. MWR will reimburse up to $17 per week for meal/food reimbursement when submitting receipts.

Under the direct supervision of the MWR Director, MWR Interns may expect to gain operational and programming experience in a number of these MWR facilities and spend time with the Base Cape Cod MWR Management Team gaining experience in administrative functions required to operate a large MWR Program. DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS: Seeking self-starting and independent students with desire to gain experience in programming and operation in any/all of the above facilities/activities. SUPERVISOR/MENTOR QUALIFICATIONS: Mrs. Melissa Conlon has over 20 years of affiliation with the Department of Defense and Homeland Security. Mrs. Conlon has served the US Government since 2007, eight years for the Air Force and as Financial Management Specialist and MWR Director for the Coast Guard. This experience includes being a young single active duty airman, to a married dependent spouse with children serving overseas. Melissa Conlon is fully aware of and committed to supporting and resolving quality of life issues for members assigned to Cape Cod.
HOUSING: Housing will be provided, two students per house, in a non-smoking facility. Pets are not allowed. Students will coordinate housing with the Cape Cod MWR staff once accepted at that location.

SUPERVISOR/MENTOR QUALIFICATIONS: Mr. Tony Buero began his second career with Coast Guard MWR in January 2007. His experience includes 28 years of service with the U.S. Navy, retiring as a Lieutenant Commander. While on active duty, he served as Director of MWR, Naval Training Center Orlando and as the Administrative Officer/MWR Officer on board the USS HARRY S TRUMAN (CVN 75). He is currently certified through the International Military Community Executives Association (IMCEA) as a Certified Military Community Executive, CMCE. Leadership skills are a natural, he is a fine mentor, and is aggressively working on numerous new and exciting events for Training Center Cape May.

The mentorship skills of the E City MWR Team are a natural for an intern in the field of recreation, and they are always working on new and exciting events for Elizabeth City.

SUPERVISOR/MENTOR QUALIFICATIONS: Interns will be introduced to the team of MWR professionals at Base Ketchikan MWR. The Director of the team is CWO Ed Csech, Base Ketchikan MWR Division Chief and south-east Alaska Regional MWR Director. Mr. Csech attended the University of Phoenix's John Sperling School of Business and Management in California, where he earned a Master of Management Degree, graduating with honors, a 3.97 GPA, a current member of Delta Mu Delta International Business Honor Society. He also holds a Bachelor's of Science Degree with an emphasis on Business Management from the University of Phoenix. During his tour of duty at Base Ketchikan, he oversees a Morale Boat Program, a Morale Gear Rental Locker, a Fitness Facility, Morale Committee events, and an All Hands Food & Beverage establishment. He also assists and provides direction to over twenty Coast Guard units throughout south-east Alaska, helping to improve and establish morale activities and recreational events.
HOUSING: If outside the commuting area, housing will be provided in the barracks onboard Base Ketchikan. The barracks is a non-smoking facility and pets are not allowed. Students will coordinate housing with Base Ketchikan MWR once accepted.

SUPERVISOR/MENTOR QUALIFICATIONS: Intern(s) will be introduced to the team of MWR professionals at Base Kodiak MWR. The MWR management team has over 85 years of combined experience within the recreation profession. Team members include:
Mr. Richard Carman, MWR Director, has over 30 years of experience in the recreation field, spending 9 years with civilian community recreation before the transition to Coast Guard MWR in 1992 as Recreation Specialist , Youth Activities. Mr. Carman has worked at two Coast Guard Bases, Kodiak, Alaska, and Cape Cod, Massachusetts. He is a Certified Parks and Recreation Professional through the National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA) and maintains Certified Aquatics Facility Operator and Certified Playground Safety Inspector certifications with NRPA. Mr. Carman is currently serving on the Armed Forces Recreation Network and is the military representative to the NRPA National Certification Board.
Ms. Linda Pena, Business Section Chief, is primary contact for Kodiak MWR interns and has 26 years of experience working for the Coast Guard. Fifteen years are with MWR Kodiak as Business and Community Support Section Chief. Ms. Pena manages the MWR Category C facilities including the Guest House, RV Park, 4-Plex Apartments, Pizza Parlor, Golden Anchor Sports Pub, Catering, and Bear Valley Golf Course. She oversees an annual appropriated fund budget of $250K and nonappropriated fund budget of $1.7M. Mr. Pena actively works commercial sponsorship and advertisement sales for MWR events, community USO Shows, and has accomplished many renovation projects to improve the Category C facilities.
Ms. Rachael Dyer, Community Support Section Chief, has over 30 years of experience in the recreation field, 25 with the Coast Guard. Ms. Dyer worked for the local Parks and Recreation Department prior to her MWR career with Kodiak MWR starting in 1996. She started in MWR with aquatics, before moving on to the Athletic Director and Community Support Section Chief with oversight of all adult athletic and youth activities staff, programs, and facilities.
HOUSING: Housing may be provided in the MWR Guest House. The Guest House is a non-smoking facility and pets are not allowed. Students will coordinate housing with the Kodiak MWR once accepted.

DESCRIPTION: U. S. Coast Guard Base Miami Beach MWR is located beside MacArthur Causeway in Miami Beach. This location has a fitness center, racquetball courts, pool, multi-purpose recreation court, discounted amusement tickets operation, and the all hands food and beverage operation - the “Gator Den.” The Marathon Recreational Lodging, cottages and recreational vehicle (RV) pads, is located on Vaca Key in the heart of the Florida Keys 111 miles Southwest of Miami and 48 miles northeast of Key West. The recreation facilities include four, 1-bedroom cottages and four RV pads. Reservations for the cottages and RV pads are coordinated through Miami. SUPERVISOR/MENTOR QUALIFICATIONS: Mr. Steve Ondriezek has over 25 years of MWR experience and currently serves as the Regional MWR Director in Miami, Florida. During his tenure with the Air Force MWR Program, Steve served in a wide range of positions including Outdoor Recreation, Events Coordinator, and multiple facilities manager. He began with the Coast Guard MWR in December, 2016, and currently oversight responsibility of all MWR operations at Base Miami Beach and the area of responsibility.

Child Development Center: Ms. Patricia McIlveen has over 20 years of direct Military Early Childhood Program management experience. She earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Early Childhood Education and graduate level coursework in program management and leadership. As the Coast Guard Academy Child Development Center Director, she has guided the Center through the NAEYC Accreditation process since 1997. Patricia received numerous awards for her service, most notably, the Department of Transportation Award of Excellence. She has served as an active Board Member on the Connecticut Association for the Education of Young Children since 2000, holding positions of President, Vice President, and Accreditation Chairperson. She also serves as Coast Guard liaison on several local community councils and boards for young children. Intern opportunities exist to work in this NAEYC accredited early childhood program with 105 children from 6 weeks to 5 years of age. The program highlights 8 classrooms separated into three age groups. The staff of 32 teachers and assistants work together to provide developmentally appropriate opportunities and experiences which will help to develop the whole child. The program utilizes up to date technology of a web based curriculum by which staff can input child observations to chart development and share progress with parents.
Culinary Arts: Mr. Jeffrey McOmber has over 20 years of direct MWR management experience. He received his secondary education training from Johnson & Wales University where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Culinary Arts. As the Executive Chef for the Coast Guard Academy Officers' Club, he typically caters over 250 events annually, including at least 20 weddings. He has received numerous awards for his service. Most notably he was selected as a member for the International Military Community Executives Association (IMCEA) Military All Star Chefs team which competed in the Iron Chef "Mystery Box Challenge" at Catersource 2007. He also served as representative on the annual Joint Service Catering Panel and was subsequently awarded the Guiding Principles Award. During her time at the Sonoma State University, she also obtained minor degrees in Psychology and Spanish. During her tour of duty at TRACEN-Petaluma, Ms. Pozzi has held the following positions: Recreation Aid, Recreation Assistant, Recreation Specialist, and Youth Services Director.

She held professional memberships and Board affiliation with, then, Armed Forces Recreation Society (AFRS), and the International Military Community Executives Association (IMCEA). She was recipient of the AFRS’ Fellow Award in 2003, and the USCG Chief Financial Officer Business Management award in 2005, American Society of Military Comptrollers Excellence in Business Management in 2005, IMCEA Roy C. Olsen Memorial Award in 2007, and 2018 MWR Program of the Year Award.

He was a recipient IMCEA Roy C. Olson Memorial Award in 2009 and the AFRS John Pat Harden Practitioner Award in 2004.
