Captain Veronica Brecht
A native of Birmingham, AL, CAPT Brecht graduated from the U.S. Coast Guard Academy in 1998 with a Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering. Her first assignment was as student engineer and Damage Control Assistant on the CGC DURABLE. In 2000, she attended the University of Illinois and earned a Master’s of Science degree in Civil Engineering.
Upon completion of graduate school, CAPT Brecht served her first civil engineering tour at Civil Engineering Unit (CEU) Miami from 2001 to 2003 as a construction manager and Civil Engineering Coordinator for Groups Mobile and Ohio Valley. Next, she assumed the duties as Engineer Officer of USCGC ACUSHNET where she was responsible for the maintenance and safe operation of the cutter’s more than 60 year old propulsion plant conducting patrols in the Bering Sea.
In 2005, she served as a Port Engineer at MAT DET St Petersburg, FL providing Naval Engineering support to USCGC’s VENTUROUS, RESOLUTE, JOSHUA APPLEBY, VISE, SHRIKE, HAWK, and MARLIN. In 2008, CAPT Brecht was assigned as the Facilities Engineer for Aviation Training Center Mobile providing mission support for the Coast Guard’s cradle of aviation.
She returned to a CEU in 2013 where she assumed duties as Executive Officer of CEU Oakland/Mission Readiness Product Line, servicing Districts 11, 13, 14, 17 with varying degrees of civil engineering support. In 2016, CAPT Brecht was assigned as the Executive Officer of Base New Orleans, serving the Coast Guard’s largest geographic district, District Eight, responsible for all mission support activities in the 26-state region. In 2020, she was honored to accept orders as Commanding Officer of Base Charleston.
CAPT Brecht’s personal decorations include a Meritorious Service Medal, four Commendation Medals, two Achievement Medals, and a Letter of Commendation. She is the 2004 recipient of the CAPT Dorothy Stratton Leadership Award. A parent of three beautiful daughters, she spends her time parenting, reading, and appreciating historic architecture.
