About the Course

The Senior Enlisted Leadership Course (SELC) is focused on creating a pool of highly trained and motivated senior enlisted leaders better prepared for assignment to a Master Chief or Senior Chief Petty Officer billet including select high-profile assignments, such as Command Master Chief and Rating Force Master Chief.

Using the U.S. Coast Guard’s Leadership Development Framework, SELC develops critical leadership skills required of Senior Enlisted Leadership positions by addressing human resource and organizational policies, professional communications, the relationships between workforce and senior leadership, and concepts of strategy and organizational change management.

Advancement Requirement

This course is a requirement to advance to E-9.

The below courses are equivalent to SELC that meet the requirement:

• Navy Senior Enlisted Academy (USNSEA) - Only if member has graduated from an E-7 required course. If not, those above the cut for E-8 may attend and this counts for the E-7 requirement.
• Joint Special Operations Forces Senior Enlisted Academy (JSOFSEA)
• Sergeants Major Academy

Location

Coast Guard Academy, New London, Connecticut
Length: 6 weeks asynchronous online, 2 weeks resident 

Convening Dates

Prerequisites

Prospective students must be in pay grade E-8 or E-9. Students must have successfully completed the CPO Academy or DoD equivalent, comply with Coast Guard or parent service as applicable weight standards with a current entry in Direct Access within the 30-day period prior to executing their orders, and must be up to date with their Physical Health Assessment (PHA).

To graduate, students are required to participate in the six-week facilitated online learning portion prior to arrival for the two-week resident training at the Leadership Development Center. 

Students are also required to complete the following prior to attending the course:

• A grammar skills diagnostic exercise
• A leadership assessment (LPI 360) survey
• Reading assignments

Priority:

• E-9 without SELC
• E-8 above the cut for E-9

To Attend

Members interested in attending should put in an ETR to compete for a seat.

Orders cancellation and advancement waivers

Process for E-9 criteria waiver:

1. Member is assigned orders to SELC and needs to cancel those orders.
2. Reach out to ETQC course scheduler and the SELC Course Chief to be assigned another convening to attend.
3. Member can request a waiver of the advancement policy to PPC (ADV) thru their first flag and FC-L. Find an example memo here >>  
4. If the member’s name comes up on an EPAA and they do not have a waiver and have not graduated, advancement will be withheld until the 1^st or 15^th of the month following graduation from SELC or equivalent DoD course.
