Base Cape Cod Chlordane

Overview

Environmental sampling as part of the Safe Homes Initiative identified chlordane in the soil at five residences within Base Cape Cod housing. The Coast Guard is conducting expanded testing to inform a long-term remediation plan that will help ensure families’ health and safety. There is no current indication that any families have experienced health issues resulting from chlordane. However, to prevent potential exposure, families in Base Cape Cod Housing should not dig in or disturb soil located within 40 inches of their home's foundation.

Background
  • Chlordane was a common insecticide used for termite prevention starting in the 1940s until being banned in 1988. It was typically applied to soil around building foundations and binds tightly to soil particles, which limits its ability to spread. Homes built before 1988 were likely to have chlordane applied to the foundation and nearby soil as a normal pesticide during construction and for follow-on treatments.

  • The Coast Guard is committed to the safety and well-being of all our members and housing residents and is investigating the extent of chlordane presence and mitigating in accordance with appropriate state and federal guidelines.

Process
  • At this time, there is no evidence of airborne contamination or human exposure to chlordane. To ensure families’ safety, indoor air sampling is being scheduled for homes with soil samples positive for chlordane.

  • Additional soil sampling to determine the extent of chlordane presence in the previously tested homes is being scheduled for early March 2026.

  • Out of an abundance of caution, separate soil sampling of the Child Development Center outdoor areas and playgrounds is planned for May 2026.
