Celebrating a significant milestone for operational readiness and family support in the Coast Guard Arctic District, Adm. Kevin Lunday, acting commandant of the Coast Guard, and Troy Edgar, deputy secretary of the Department of Homeland Security, marked the completion of two major infrastructure projects totaling $131 million with a ribbon-cutting ceremony at Base Kodiak on Aug. 11. Base Kodiak is the largest operational facility in the Coast Guard and a critical provider of U.S. presence and capability in the Arctic region, supporting both surface and aviation operations.

One project is a new 20,000-square-foot maintenance and weapons detachment building that will support and enhance the mission readiness of fast response cutters and future offshore patrol cutters operating in the Arctic region. In addition to this new purpose-designed building, the effort included upgrades to an existing cutter storage warehouse and construction of a new buoy yard and parking lot. The total value of this project is $34 million.

Lunday and Edgar also highlighted the completion of 50 new family housing units. This project delivered 38 three-bedroom units, 12 four-bedroom units, a playground and neighborhood amenities including upgraded landscaping, roadways, sidewalks, utilities and lighting, creating a safe and comfortable environment for Coast Guard members and their families at Base Kodiak. The total value of this project is $97 million.

The completed cutter support facilities and family housing units were planned and executed by the Coast Guard’s Shore Infrastructure Program Executive Office, Facilities Design and Construction Center and Shore Infrastructure Logistics Center.

Additional infrastructure work at Base Kodiak is currently underway, including major investments being made in the cargo and fuel piers and water utilities. More family housing projects are also in the planning stages.
