The Coast Guard is one step closer to acquiring and deploying the third generation of long range interceptor (LRI III) cutter boats following completion of the first operational test period.

The LRI III is a twin-engine, twin-waterjet driven boat, capable of speeds over 40 knots. The boats will be equipped with a robust navigation and communication system that will allow each LRI III to deploy over-the-horizon, or beyond the line of sight of the cutter. Boats deployed aboard cutters facilitate almost all missions, with emphasis on search and rescue; drug and alien interdiction operations; living marine resources; defense readiness; and ports, waterways and coastal security.

The crew of Coast Guard Cutter James completed operational tests on the lead LRI III in April 2025. The Boat Acquisition Program used these tests to identify potential design and performance concerns to inform the finale configuration for full-rate production and deployment of the LRI III. The program plans to procure up to 15 LRI IIIs before 2029.

During its deployment, James conducted counternarcotic operations in the Eastern Pacific Ocean and participated in joint exercises with the U.S. Navy in the Atlantic Ocean. Working alongside other Coast Guard units and multiagency partners, James’s crew disrupted drug smuggling operations in the vast ocean off the Pacific Coast of Mexico and Central and South America, assisting in the seizure of more than 48,000 pounds of illicit drugs valued at $510 million and the apprehension of 34 suspected drug smugglers.

The LRI III will replace the current fleet of LRI IIs as those boats approach the end of their service life. The Coast Guard maintains eleven 35-foot LRI II boats for deployment on National Security Cutters.
