FRC Emlen Tunnell continues namesake’s legacy of saving lives and advancing cross-cultural exchange

When selecting names for its cutters, the Coast Guard has honored notable African-Americans who paved the way for equal opportunities in the service. Before he became the first Black player inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame, Emlen Tunnell served in the Coast Guard and was credited with saving the lives of two shipmates in separate incidents.

The Coast Guard deployed the MHS GENESIS electronic health records (EHR) system to 26 clinics and 48 ashore sickbays within the Coast Guard Atlantic Area, completing the first segment of EHR system implementation for the service.
